Air source heat pumps use the same principle as ground source heat pumps, but extract the heat from the air, rather than the ground. As such their installation is much simpler and cheaper but the available heat is not constant.
About Air Source Heat Pump
How does the technology work? Air source heat pumps use raw ambient air to generate heat. The system passes air through an evaporator so heating the refrigerant with heat from the air. The refrigerant is then compressed and expands in the condenser giving up its heat, usually to stored water in the cylinder. The heat from his cylinder can then be used for heating or hot water applications. They are usually easier and cheaper than ground source heat pumps to install but slightly less efficient.Where can an air source heat pump be installed? They can be installed on outside walls, roofs, or free-standing adjacent to a building.
